Preparing Your Belongings to Move Over Seas

September 2nd, 2010 by armoire No comments »

If you are moving overseas and you are bringing your furniture and valuables along, you might want to take the proper precautions to ensure your items are safe from damages. I recommend hiring professional movers for the packing of your items and the padding and shrink wrapping of your furniture.

You need to have plenty of moving pads, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, packing paper, boxes, labels and tape. Another moving item you might want to purchase is plastic mattress bags. The moving company can provide these moving items at an additional cost or if you’re moving yourself you need to make sure you have them on hand. When you are packing your boxes try to maximize your space by selling or giving away items you might not need or can purchase easily when you arrive at your new destination.

Furniture should be padded and shrink wrapped on all sides for protection from scratches and the elements. You can fill your furniture that has drawers with cloth items but I do not recommend any papers or breakable items inside them. Make sure all your breakables are vacant from your dressers, armoires, buffets, nightstands and chest of drawers before you pad them.

When you pack your kitchen make sure you do not pack any food that will rot or spoil. Pack your fragile dishes and glass items with packing paper and bubble wrap. The dishes should be packed on their sides. Do not stack them flat. If you do then the ones on the bottom are more likely to break because of the combined weight of the others on top. Glasses and stem ware should be stuffed on in the inside with crinkled wrapping paper and wrapped on the outside with it also.

Shrink wrapping your fabric furniture such as sofas, love seats, arm chairs and recliners is a good idea to protect them from the elements, dust and grime. You can stand a sofa on its end to fully wrap it. You might want to remove the cushions and wrap them separate. If you are leaving them on the sofa make sure they are secure enough that they will not move when carried and mess up the shrink wrapping. New heavy duty trash bags are good for protecting your sofa cushions and it is a lot easier to do than shrink wrapping.

Pictures and mirrors should be padded and placed in picture boxes. Use your bubble wrap and packing paper to ensure they are protected. If you do not have picture boxes, pad and shrink wrap your pictures and mirrors. If you have extra cardboard you should place some over the front of the glass and mirrors before wrapping. If you have any extremely fragile and valuable pictures you may want to have them professionally wood crated.

Labeling your items is very important. Make sure you label any glass furniture accordingly, don’t forget to label which side is the front. Label your boxes accordingly with fragile and/or heavy. If your new destination has people that speak another language other than English you should label in that language as well. If your belongings are being shipped in a group container along with items that do not belong to you, take extra care in making sure your belongings are labeled and protected from damage.

Remember to give yourself enough time to prepare for your over seas move. Now that you are packed and your belongings are protected from damage and the elements you can relax and have a good trip. Good luck with your moving adventure!

How To Choose Your New Jewelry Armoire

September 1st, 2010 by armoire No comments »

Do you often misplace the strands of pearls you wore at last night’s dinner at the opera with friends? Can you never find your favorite piece of jewelry when you need it most for that very important date? Well, worry no more. Get a jewelry armoire to store your jewels in the most elegant and efficient way.

A jewelry armoire may not be as huge as the special room beneath Buckingham Palace where Queen Elizabeth keeps her jewelry collection, but it certainly can store more of your beads, stones aand bangles than the musical jewelry box that you’ve kept since high school for sentimental reasons.

Armoires

The French word armoire originally meant an arms cabinet or gun storage, but not anymore. In these modern times, an armoire is defined as a tall cabinet, usually with drawers, shelves and doors. Armoires nowadays can be wardrobe armoires, jewelry armoires, entertainment armoires and just recently even computer armoires.

Even family-friendly Wal-mart stocks faux burl wood jewelry armoires for less than $200 ordered online, so there’s really no excuse for not getting out there and choosing your jewelry armoire.

How to choose your jewelry armoire

1. The first thing you need to know is your woods or non-woods and including your pretend woods. And then decide which suit you most.

Do you like your jewelry armoire to gain more character and charm even with wear? Then a real solid wood jewelry armoire is for you. Most real wood jewelry armoires are made from oak, maple or pine, so you can choose from the classic yellow brown oaks, regal cherry red maples or mission brown practical pines.

Do you not mind the look of an engineered MDF teamed with laminates or wood veneers for your first jewelry armoire? Then you can hop on to the internet and shop for hand-carved, hand-painted jewelry armoire beauties which look like wood and cost less.

2. The next thing to decide is where you are going to put your jewelry armoire. Will it stand next to the Victorian mahogany chest of drawers in your bedroom? How much space do you have for it? Do you want it to match with the other furniture in the room? Or do you want it to be a centerpiece?

Depending on your answers, you may want to consider the homely French country style with its handcrafted doors, the elegant Queen Anne dark cherry heirloom style or the chunkier mission brown jewelry chest box style.

3. How will you use your jewelry armoire?

Will it be mainly a storage space for your jewelry? Then you may want a tall chest of six to eight drawers with sides that swing open to hang your pearls and necklaces.

Or will it be a place where you can sit down, try on that flaming red ruby necklace after you’ve put on your makeup? Then you might consider having a shorter vanity armoire with mirror, vanity and a soft-cushioned bench.

4. Are there any fengshui (or child proofing) considerations for your jewelry armoire?

Does it have to have round edges so as not to shoot sharp darts of energy while you are trying to relax before an important party? Are you afraid your toddler might bang her head on the sharp rectangular edges your jewelry armoire as she uncontrollably waddles to you while you’re putting on a pair of ruby earrings? Then the half-round jewelry armoire with rounded legs might be the one for you.

5. Are there any other security considerations for your jewelry armoire?

Do you have home contents insurance but would still feel safer if your jewels are locked? Then you may want to get a jewelry armoire that can be locked.

6. And last but not least – how much are you willing to pay for it?

Does your budget fall around the $300 mark? Then you can buy popular, best selling brands in real oak with mirror, eight drawers and side swing doors to hang all your pearls and golden necklaces.

Do you have around $400 to spare? Then you can get yourself an elegant dark cherry red maple Queen Anne jewelry armoire accented with detail rice carved posts on its doorface.

How about if you just have $59.95? Then the excitement of the hunt for good and used jewelry armoires is for you. Last time I checked there was a cherry Queen Anne jewelry armoire chest box being auctioned on ebay for a mere $59.95. But you better hurry.

Should I Move Myself Or Hire a Mover?

August 22nd, 2010 by armoire No comments »

Times are tight these days and everyone is pinching their pennies. Especially when it comes to moving day. There are a lot of costs involved with moving like boxes, tape, deposits and of course getting your stuff from point A to B. What’s the most cost efficient way to get your furniture to your new place, hiring a mover or doing it yourself?

Single Mom

This is an easy one to answer if you’re a single Mom, have kids and don’t know any strapping young men to help you out. Hire a mover! If you have more than one kid, the money you would spend on daycare on moving day would probably pay for at least a couple of hours of professional moving services. Instead of sending your kids to the daycare, keep them entertained at your house with coloring books, a few of their favorite toys or even better, send them to a friends house for a couple of hours. Think of it as a trade: money not spent on daycare for one day equals money available for movers. The movers will be able to move you way faster than if you were moving yourself, giving you more time to spend with your kids in your new home.

College Student

If your parents are willing to help pay for it, make it easy on yourself and hire a mover. Most college students are on a very tight budget however, so you’ll probably have to opt for finding your own truck. You could rent a U-haul , but an even better idea is to ask some of your friends on campus if they have a truck or know someone who does. It might be cheaper for you to offer to pay them something for helping you out instead of renting a U-haul.

Business Owner

For this part we’ll refer to the old saying “Time is Money”. The quicker you can get your items moved, the quicker you can get back to business and making money. Hire a professional mover. If you have to take 2 days or more off from work to get yourself moved, you’ll find your business to be missing out on a lot of profit. The cost of hiring the movers would most likely be less than the loss your business would take for being closed for multiple days. If your move is not gigantic, then the movers should be able to move and unpack you in only one day, saving you time and money.

You’ll also find that the movers will have the experience and know how to load and stack all of your items so they can move you in as few trips as possible, which again, saves you time. Most people will spend quite a while trying to figure out how to get their larger pieces of furniture through tight turns. Experienced movers have run across tight turns many times. They will already know what they need to do to get the item through the turn while also preventing damage to the piece and the walls. This knowledge saves time, which in turn saves you money!

Out of town moves

This scenario will require a lot of calculating. You’ll need to get the rates of how much it will cost to rent a U-haul/Penske. Ask if their rates are higher on the weekends. Keep in mind that you may have to rent the truck for 2 days if you don’t finish moving before the drop off office closes. Also, make sure to ask if there’s an extra charge if you go over a certain amount of miles from your origin to destination. You’ll also need to know how many miles per gallon of gas the truck gets so you can figure out how much you’ll be spending on gas. You’ll need to rent moving equipment like dollies, moving blankets and straps as well. Check their insurance prices also. Many times you’ll find that you may already have the coverage they’re trying to charge you for on your current auto policy. Call your auto insurance agency to see what coverage you already have on driving a rented vehicle.

For figuring out the cost of hiring a moving company you’ll need to submit an inventory list to them. Get quotes from several different companies because they’ll each charge different rates for mileage. Compare the quote they give you to the amount it would cost to rent a U-haul. Sometimes you’ll find the moving companies price to be within a couple hundred dollars of having to move yourself. You can either save that money and spend energy moving your items, time driving on the road and frustration at the whole experience, or have the movers do all of the hard, tedious work for you for just a little more than you budgeted.

Summary

Life is already hard enough nowadays without the hassle of uprooting your home to a new location. So if the price is right, your time is valuable or you just flat out hate moving yourself, let the professionals get it done for you.
